It's that time again. OMPA was particularly exhausting this year with Gwen in finals contention. Her first event was bright and early Saturday morning. Expectations were high for our top CCC free swimmer and she didn't disappoint with a huge pop and a 15.82 second time, coming in 4th out of 179 swimmers in the prelims. I saw Gwen staying in the pool after her race to study the scoreboard. And when she emerged, she had a HUGE smile on her face :). She did it - she made her first OMPA finals! Later that day, she even popped her breaststroke time, which she hadn't done in a long time, and made it to the consolation finals.
Whitney's been all over the place with her times this summer, our laid back little swimmer who is more concerned with how much candy she finagle than how fast she can swim. And while she didn't pop, her free time (hindered by a feet-first jumping "dive") was still solidly bronze.
By mid-day, excitement had turned into exhaustion for me - we had both stroke finals for Gwen and both girls were in the medley relay. Gwen got 6th in freestyle and 14th in breaststroke in the finals. Whitney's relay team was just 2 seconds off a Gold relay time - amazing for our tiny little team.
Sunday was backstroke. Gwen popped again, and while Whitney swam super fast, several crashes into the lane line cost her a pop but still had a great silver time and a 37th place finish.
Overall, a successful meet that feels so good when it's over!
